I know. That flies in the face of what your junior high – sorry, I’m dating myself – your middle school science teacher told you. But it’s true. Plants don’t grow toward the light. It only seems like they do. In reality auxin plant hormones make the cells on the shady side of the stem grow longer. The stem bends because the dark side pushes over the light side.
Sometimes it can seem that the salvation of someone with a “dark” past is a stronger testimony than a “good kid” who just finally believed the church teachings he grew up with.
Which makes a better story? The drug addict who has an encounter with Jesus, kicks his habit, and turns his life around? A gang member who gets saved, swears off violence, and starts a halfway house for ex-cons? Or a bread truck route salesman, married for 20 years, 2 great kids, who gets in a conversation at a Birthday party, decides this “God thing” is worth checking out, starts visiting a church and decides Jesus is who He says He is, gets saved, and still drives a bread truck, is still married, and still has great kids?
A “fox hole” conversion can seem more impressive. But it’s not. The change that takes place – an old spiritual nature exchanged for a new one, bought with the blood of a Savior – is no less a miracle.
So, whichever side your path started on, that’s your story. No less a miracle than anyone else’s. Just be thankful you have a story to tell.
