In December 2021 Pew Research Center reported 60% of Protestants in the US considered themselves “born again” or evangelical Christians.1 Some 40% of non-Catholic Christians either didn’t consider themselves “born again” or didn’t answer the question.
And over 30% of people who considered themselves “spiritual” were not sure they believed in God.2
So, what does being “spiritual” mean?
If you search the internet, you will find answers anywhere from being “born again” and having the Holy Spirit in you, to having a belief in something beyond the self, to having a strong connection to yourself, the Earth, and everything on the Earth. The website yourdictionary.com says “spirituality” is the state of feeling a connection with God or the spirit world. I think that is the best definition. Because it shows that being spiritual is not necessarily a good thing.
There is a spirit world. But not all spirits are good.
In Acts 19, some exorcists tried to cast out an evil spirit by saying, ““We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” But the evil spirit said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit beat up the exorcists and everybody in Ephesus knew about it.
James 2 says even demons believe there is one God – and tremble.
A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square. Likewise, God is a spiritual being, but not all spiritual things are Godly. That’s plain Godometry.
