As we approach Labor Day, I think about how many of us define ourselves by our jobs. And measure our worth by how much we make. And that, by how much we make compared to others.
In Matthew 20, Jesus tells a parable of a vineyard owner who hired workers at 6am, 9am, noon, 3pm, and 5pm; and when the workday was over, the owner paid them all the same amount. Those who worked the most grumbled about not getting more than those who worked less. The owner said, “Hey. Not my problem. I paid you what you agreed to, didn’t I?” Or words to that effect.
Think back. Why did you take your job? Was it just for the paycheck? Or did you know deep down God placed you there? 1 Corinthians 10:31 and Colossians 3:23 say, whatever you do, glorify the Lord in it.
And remember. Comparing yourself to others is using the wrong yard stick.
