As we approach Easter, I’m reminded of a song we sang when I was growing up. During the Passover Seder dinner. Dayenu is Hebrew for “It would have been enough.” A song about the Exodus:
If God had carried out the plagues against Egypt and not brought us out of Egypt, Dayenu. It would have been enough!
If He had brought us out of Egypt and not parted the Red Sea for us, Dayenu.
If He had parted the Red Sea and not fed us manna in the wilderness, Dayenu.
If He had fed us manna in the wilderness and not taken us to Mount Sinai, Dayenu.
If He had taken us to Mount Sinai and not given us the Law, Dayenu.
You get the idea.
But I have a different perspective now. And it’s based on Psalm 103 and John 10:10, among other things.
If He forgave all my failures and did not heal all my diseases, Dayenu.
If He healed all my diseases and did not renew my youth like the eagle, Dayenu.
If He saved me and did not give me life abundant, Dayenu.
But He did. So, while it may have been enough for me, I’m glad it wasn’t enough for Him. He is the God of more than enough.
